Join an Organized Outing

Registration for winter outings typically opens December 15th. Registration for summer outings typically opens May 1st.  Please only register for trips you are committed to attending as cancellations hinder our ability to reliably offer these trips.

No! All of our trips are free and open to the public.  We encourage everyone who is able to consider becoming a member or making a donation to support this program and the work of Glacier-Two Medicine Alliance.

All trips are led by knowledge, local volunteers, board members, or staff of Glacier-Two Medicine Alliance. Although trip leaders have extensive personal experience in the activity they’re leading, along with good knowledge of the area that they are eager to share, these are not professionally guided trips and our leaders do not typically have any special training or certifications. Trip leaders are merely facilitating the outing.

2. Review the details of the outing to ensure it matches your ability level and personal calendar.
3. If can event requires registration there will be instructions in the event details on how to do so.
   Please note: You can register multiple people at once, but each participant is required to personally read and submit the liability waiver and requested information linked in the registration form.
4. You’ll receive an email confirmation containing your event information. Please retain it for your records. If you have any questions about the outing or need to cancel, please follow the link in your confirmation email or contact us as soon as possible so they can reassign your spot.

Each outing has a participation limit to protect an area’s ecological and cultural values or to comply with management guidelines. If a trip is full you can still register in order to join the waitlist, or email info@glaciertwomedicine.org to let us know you’re interested and we’ll add you to the waitlist. If a space opens up, we will contact you!

We understand plans changes. If they do, please let us know right away so someone else can take your spot. To cancel your registration, please email us at info@glaciertwomedicine.org.

Our outings typically meet in the community parking lot in East Glacier across from the Glacier Trading Company (i.e. Brown Store).  You will receive an email from our office, or your trip leader, a week prior to your trip that confirms the exact meet location and time, as well as other logistics.

We prefer that everyone meet in the town of East Glacier Park in front of the Trading Company for multiple reasons. First, this is the only place with reliable cell service for emergency communication. Second, this is the only reliable restroom availability. Third, we usually carpool to trailheads because they are not well marked and have limited parking. Meeting in East Glacier helps ensure we all get to the same place at the same time.

GTMA loves carpooling! Quite a few of our trip participants join us from the Flathead Valley, Great Falls, and even Helena. Please reach out if you would like to carpool and GTMA can help facilitate arrangements. We encourage folks to carpool from our meet location in East Glacier to the trailhead, as most trailheads we use have limited parking.

Very few of our outings begin at trailheads with toilets. Participants should be prepared to do their business in the woods using appropriate Leave No Trace techniques (ask us how if you’re not sure). Restrooms are available prior to the trip in the town of East Glacier inside the Glacier Trading Company (Brown Store) or at the Bear Tracks gas station.

The difficult ratings provided are our attempt to provide a consistent description of the expected physical difficulty of an outing. For your safety and enjoyment as well as that of other participants, please select an adventure that suits your physical ability, health, and experience, and equipment. Ask us if you’re not sure whether a trip is right for you.

Easy
3 miles or less; mostly level ground or only gradual inclines

Moderate
4 – 6 miles and/or less than a 1000′ elevation gain

Difficult
7 – 10 miles and/or 1000′ – 2000′ elevation gain

Strenuous
10+ miles and/or more than 2000′ elevation gain

All personal gear, food, and water are your responsibility unless otherwise stated in the trip description. Please dress for the weather, bring extra layers/rain gear in case the weather changes, and have a way to treat water in case you need to re-fill.

A list of suggested items will be emailed to you ahead of the trip. If, after reviewing the list, you have questions about what to bring, please contact our office. If any special equipment is needed for an outing (i.e. skis, snowshoes, binoculars), we will include that information in the trip listing.

Firearms are not permitted on a GTMA-led trip. We encourage you to bring bear spray and to familiarize yourself with how to use it. Trip leaders will carry bear spray and will review bear safety and how to use bear spray before the trip.

In addition to cold temperatures, winter weather in our area is often quite windy! Please be sure to carry extra thermal layers, including hat, gloves, and a good wind jacket. Allow extra time for travel to East Glacier. If the weather forecast is too ominous, we will reschedule the outing with as much advance notice as possible.
